- Description
- Open cut mining continues to use DC motors in Electric Rope Shovel, Electric Dragline and some other applications. Compared to AC machines, DC machine are relatively complex, particularly since they require a commutator to mechanically rectify large armature currents. This mechanical commutation is inherently a source of maintenance and lost time. However, the robustness of DC machines (particularly in high power range required by digging applications), excellent dynamic properties, together with the vast experience accumulated within the industry, make them an attractive solution. Hence, although AC motor technology is increasingly gaining market share, DC machines will continue to be used for up to several decades. Aging of the motor fleet will intensify maintenance problems during the transition period.
